“Braxton truly has created his own sonic alphabet here.”—Exclaim! (Canada)

“What’s always set Clark apart is his eclecticism, dynamism, and flair for the dramatic….in electronic music’s never-ending battle between man and machine, he’s seeking a third way.”—Pitchfork

This special double bill features two leading innovators of today’s experimental electronica scene. Since departing from indie band Battles, Tyondai Braxton has concentrated on building a career as a vanguard composer (for ensembles like Kronos Quartet and Alarm Will Sound), fashioning ecstatic, algorithm-driven suites of orchestral scope. With the release of his recent album HIVE1 on Nonesuch—which evolved from an installation-based work originally performed at New York’s Guggenheim Museum in 2013—Braxton is shaping his churning, kinetic soundscapes for solo performance. Join us for this concert that’s sure to showcase his cerebral playfulness, slippery grooves, and intoxicating bursts of abstract sonic shapes.

As Warp Records artist Clark (née Chris Clark) says, “Music is like sculpture. It’s like trying to capture a moment of ultimate momentum, and distill it forever.” In Clark’s chiseled, dystopian vision of techno, the sounds of the machine meet the sounds of the world as synthesized stabs and drum machines collide with treated field recordings. He recontextualizes the all-enveloping club experience into an immersive cinematic whole where kaleidoscopic textures intertwine with shifting melodies, emotions, and moods.
