Wexner Center's Fall Jazz Series Kicks off September 24

The Wexner Center’s fall jazz series, which kicks off next week, features performers from around the country—and homegrown talent, too. The series, which runs through December, is presented in the intimate Performance Space, the best room for jazz in town, in a cabaret-style set-up that provides concert-quality sound in a club atmosphere.

The full series includes the following: Joe Lovano and Dave Douglas Quintet: Sound Prints (Tuesday, September 24, at 7 and 9 pm); Mehliana featuring Brad Mehldau and Mark Guiliana (Wednesday, October 23, at 8 pm); Byron Stripling Quartet featuring Bobby Floyd (Friday, November 22, at 7:30 and 9:30 pm); and Bill Frisell’s Big Sur Quintet featuring Eyvind Kang, Hank Roberts, Rudy Royston, and Jenny Scheinman (Tuesday, December 3, at 8 pm).

Blues for Smoke at the Wex this fall

This fall, the Wexner Center will devote the entirety of its gallery space to present Blues for Smoke, a major interdisciplinary exhibition exploring a wide range of contemporary art through the lens of the blues and “blues aesthetics.”  The exhibition, on view September 21–December 29, 2013, features works from more than 40 artists from the 1950s to the present, as well as materials from music and popular entertainment. Organized by the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, where it was on view at the Geffen Contemporary at MOCA from October 21, 2012–January 7, 2013, the exhibition more recently completed a run at the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York on Sunday, April 28, 2013.

Wexner Center hosts exclusive Midwest screening of Lee Daniels' The Butler August 14

The Wexner Center for the Arts will host the Columbus premiere of Lee Daniels’ The Butler, the latest film from Academy Award-nominated director Lee Daniels (Precious), on Wednesday, August 14 at 6:30 pm at AMC Easton, 275 Easton Town Center. The star-studded new film, starring Forest Whitaker and Oprah Winfrey, will be introduced by Pulitzer Prize-nominated Washington Post journalist and Columbus native Wil Haygood, who wrote the 2008 Post article that inspired the film. Haygood will be joined at the screening by Columbus Mayor Michael B. Coleman, Wexner Center Director Sherri Geldin, and Wexner Center Foundation Trustees.

A Wexner Center World Tour: A Summer Abroad '13

Movies from around the globe—and visit from a pair of world-renowned cinema collaborators—are a part of A Summer Abroad '13, the Wexner Center’s two-month international film series, which begins July 5. The 21-film world tour makes stops in France, Italy, Sweden, Germany, the UK, Japan, and Mexico. The tour guides are some of the most revered directors in film history, including the likes of Jean Renoir, Jean-Luc Godard, Roberto Rossellini, Ingmar Bergman, Fritz Lang, Sally Potter, Akira Kurosawa, and Luis Buñuel. 

Fall 2013 Season Announced

Coming this fall to the Wexner Center for the Arts: Blues for Smoke, an exhibition that will fill the center’s galleries; a performance of WE'RE GONNA DIE by Young Jean Lee, whose theater company is the recipient of a Wexner Center Artist Residency Award; and the world premiere of the Quay Brothers’ newest work, Mistaken Hands, also supported by a Wexner Center Artist Residency Award. ACCLAIMED WAR ON TERROR DOCUMENTARY DIRTY WARS MAKES COLUMBUS DEBUT JULY 10

The gripping new documentary Dirty Wars, which follows investigative journalist and best-selling author Jeremy Scahill as he travels through Afghanistan, Yemen, and Somalia to examine the underreported impact of the US military’s covert war on terrorism, makes its Columbus debut Wednesday, July 10 at 7 pm in the Wexner Center’s Film/Video Theater. After the screening Scahill will be joined by the film’s director Richard Rowley for a Q&A moderated by the Wexner Center Director of Film/Video David Filipi.
Earlier in the day, at 11:30 am, Scahill also will take part in a Columbus Metropolitan Club luncheon forum where he will discuss his book and work.

Free Wex Drive-In outdoor films begin June 20

A monster and his bride, a graduate, and a fox are all part of this year’s Wex Drive-In outdoor film series, which begins Thursday, June 20 with the Bride of Frankenstein (James Whale, 1935), continues Thursday, July 18 with The Graduate (Mike Nichols, 1967), and concludes Thursday, August 15 with Fantastic Mr. Fox (Wes Anderson, 2009).

Admission is free; visitors are encouraged to bring blankets and lawn chairs starting at 8 pm. Screenings will begin at dusk (around 9 pm).

Wex Receives NEA Grant to Support Creative Residencies and Related Engagement Activities

National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) Acting Chairman Joan Shigekawa has announced that the Wexner Center for the Arts is one of 817 nonprofit organizations nationwide to receive an NEA Art Works grant. The Wexner Center is recommended for a $60,000 grant to support creative residencies and commissions by the work of two artists, including related community engagement activities.

Comprehensive Paul Sietsema survey and immersive Shimon Attie video work on view this summer

The spring/summer exhibitions at the Wex will feature a pair of solo shows: Paul Sietsema, the most comprehensive account of the artist’s body of work to date in an exhibition organized by the Wexner Center, with a new work as its centerpiece; and Shimon Attie: MetroPAL.IS., an immersive multiple-channel HD video installation that tackles the Middle East conflict with characters cast from the Palestinian and Israeli communities in New York City. Both exhibitions will be on view at the Wexner Center for the Arts May 4–August 4, 2013. The Sietsema exhibition will tour to the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago later this year.
