As it readies for the culmination of Via Brasil, a multiyear initiative exploring the art and culture of Brazil, the Wexner Center has launched a new companion website, wexarts.org/viabrasil. This dynamic and complex site serves as a resource regarding the center’s formal in-depth inquiry into contemporary art in Brazil and provides context for the rise of the country’s vibrant visual arts culture.

Via Brasil Goes Online with New Website
Retrospective: Pier Paolo Pasolini
Italian director’s singular filmography will screen in January and February
Columbus, OH—The next two months will see the Wex present a nearly complete retrospective of work by famed director Pier Paolo Pasolini, with many titles screening in newly restored 35mm prints.
Best known in the US as one of the great Italian postwar filmmakers, Pasolini was also an influential, outspoken, and openly gay poet, novelist, critic, journalist, playwright, and painter who held seemingly conflicting philosophies as both a Marxist and a Catholic, and was a staunch leftist who once spoke out against left-wing student protests in favor of the working-class police.
Winter/Spring 2014 Season Announced
The upcoming season at the Wex will see the culmination of Via Brasil—the four-year initiative focusing on the vibrant culture of Brazil—in a major exhibition, Cruzamentos: Contemporary Art in Brazil; an expansive film series, Cruzamentos: Contemporary Brazilian Documentary; education programs; and performing arts programming. Member presale began Sunday, December 1; tickets are on sale to the general public beginning on December 12.
David Norr Named Senior Curator of Exhibitions
Columbus, OH—David Norr will be senior curator of exhibitions at the Wexner Center for the Arts effective mid-March, 2014. Norr is currently chief curator at the Museum of Contemporary Art Cleveland. As senior curator, Norr will work closely with Wexner Center Director Sherri Geldin and the center’s exhibitions team to help shape and realize a vital and rigorous exhibitions program, collaborate on cross-disciplinary programs within the center and across the university, identify visual arts residency award recipients, and cultivate an avid audience for the center’s exhibitions and related initiatives.
Wexner Center & Thurber House partner to present special preview screening of The Secret Life of Walter Mitty
Columbus, OH—The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, a warm and charming comic fable directed by and starring Ben Stiller and based on the classic short story by Columbus native James Thurber, will be featured in a special preview screening exclusively for Wexner Center members and friends of Thurber House on Monday, December 9 at 7 pm in the Wexner Center’s Film/Video Theater, 1871 N. High St. The film is co-presented by the Wexner Center and Thurber House. This screening marks the first co-presentation between the two organizations, although Thurber House previously supported the center’s Cinema 614 series in summer of 2012.
Zoom: Family Film Festival celebrates 10th birthday
The Wex’s Zoom: Family Film Festival celebrates a decade of screening terrific all-ages films at incredibly affordable prices—and hosting free family-friendly activities—with four days of movies and more December 5–8, 2013 (plus a bonus Stooge-a-thon “warm up” on November 29).
Nine rare Hitchcock films onscreen this month
Throughout the month of October, the Wexner Center for the Arts will present nine rarely seen silent films from the master of suspense himself, Alfred Hitchcock. Made from 1925 to 1929, Hitchcock’s first ten films—nine of which survive—are among the greatest achievements of British silent cinema and can also be seen as blueprints for the rest of Hitch’s body of work, containing many of the motifs and obsessions we have come to recognize as “Hitchcockian,” including The Lodger (1926), which the director named his first “true Hitchcock picture.”
Three outstanding American theater productions this October
The month of October will see the Wex bring unforgettable events by an acclaimed theater ensemble (Nature Theater of Oklahoma), a notable playwright (Young Jean Lee), and a boundary-eschewing multimedia artist (Miwa Matreyek), all representing the best work by independent US theater-makers today.
Architecture Powerhouse Steven Holl to Deliver 2013 Glimcher Lecture
Columbus, OH—Steven Holl will deliver the 2013 Glimcher Lecture on Wednesday, September 25 at 7 pm in Mershon Auditorium, 1871 N. High St. For the free public talk, Holl will discuss his ideas about architecture and design, as well as his own practice, which includes startling and significant additions to existing buildings, such as the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art and inventive designs for new buildings around the world.
World Premiere of Quays' UN)MISTAKEN HANDS: EX VOTO F.H. on Nov 2
Pioneering filmmakers the Quay Brothers will debut UN)MISTAKEN HANDS: EX VOTO F.H., their latest short film, at the Wexner Center on Saturday, November 2 at 7 pm. Stephen and Timothy Quay are recipients of a 2013–14 Wexner Center Residency Award in film/video; UN)MISTAKEN HANDS: EX VOTO F.H. will be completed in the center’s Film/Video Studio during the month of October.
As part of their residency, they will also introduce the Pre-Code cult classic Freaks on October 31.
