Programs for Schools

Let the Wexner Center help you expand your classroom to encompass our galleries, stages, and screens, along with all the connections the contemporary arts can offer. Our programs emphasize active looking and learning and can complement your curriculum in language arts, social studies, science, foreign languages, math, or history—as well as in the arts. School programs help students at all K–12 grade levels work toward key academic content standards by encouraging the development of critical-thinking and comprehension skills.

Check this page for current and upcoming events for schools.

Art in Action

Art in Action brings teachers and their students, teaching artists, and the Wexner Center together to create art that creates change. Participating schools and teachers enter a year-long, project based partnership that teaches educators how to connect contemporary art to the classroom curriculum and, through collaboration with local teaching artists, guides their students in working toward awareness of and solutions for global, national, or local issues through contemporary art making practices.

Assistance and financial support for Art in Action schools can include, among other things, bus subsidies, special teaching support, and help with project supply purchases. Applications for the 2014–15 school year are due April 15.

School Tours

School tours feature highlights of the Wexner Center's exhibitions and architecture. Tour content is always age appropriate and can be customized to enhance your classroom curriculum. Find all the details on the Tours page.

Teachers, are you bringing your class to the Wexner Center soon? Find out more about our upcoming exhibitions.

Pages: Art and Literacy

High school students participating in the Pages program visit the Wexner Center at least three times during the school year, experience visual arts, performing arts, and film projects, and develop their own responses in poetry, prose, and art work. Applications are now being accepted for the 2014–15 school year. Find out more about the Pages program, including how to apply.

Art & Environment

The Art & Environment program has, over the past decade, provided dozens of area high school students the opportunity to wrestle with ecological issues, be inspired by the creative solutions of eco-artists, try out their activist “chops,” and further their self-directed learning skills on campus at Ohio State with the Wexner Center. This free, half-year course for high school juniors and seniors has been newly updated in content and structure with a focus on innovative, tech-enabled learning techniques and will launch in fall 2014. Students will mix learning online with field trips, classes on campus, and evening films and performances at the Wexner Center. Students receive flex credit through their home school district (we will help with the application!). Students must apply by May 1, 2014. For complete information, please visit the Art & Environment website

Expanded Classroom: Contemporary Art in Practice

Each exhibition in our galleries presents opportunities to explore different techniques employed by today's artists. In these programs available for grades 6–12, students tour an exhibition then work directly with an artist and expand their knowledge of a specific art form.

Our fall 2013 Expanded Classroom offers writing workshops inspired by the themes explored in our fall exhibition Blues for Smoke. Please ask about the availability of this workshop when scheduling a tour; call (614) 292-6403 or email edweb@wexarts.org to schedule or for details.
