Celebrate GLBT Awareness Week at the Wexner Center by joining us for an enlightening panel discussion examining the topic of gay marriage and civil unions. After the panel and reception, Jim de Seve's documentary Tying the Knot will be shown in the Film/Video Theater at 9 PM. From an historical trip to the Middle Ages to gay hippies storming the Manhattan marriage bureau in 1971, documentary filmmaker Jim de Seve's Tying the Knot digs into the past and present to uncover the meaning of civil marriage in America today. The film focuses on the passing of two individuals in long-term gay relationships and the ensuing legal squabbles between the members of their respective families. Forced to confront the tragic reality of the current laws, the two individuals realize their marriages have meant nothing in the eyes of the law. In addition, de Seve interviews activists on both sides of the seme-sex union issue and looks back at how changing laws regarding women's property rights and interracial marriage have created a precedent for rethinking the legal contract of marriage. Called "wrenching and skillful" by the New York Times, Tying the Knot is the winner of 11 awards including 2004 Best Documentary at the Frameline Film Festival.
