Though they work in very different media, Luiza Baldan, a photographer, and Gisele Camargo, a painter, both explore the structures and geometries of urban environments, and in particular, their native Rio de Janeiro. In Baldan’s photographs, our eyes are led to ordinarily unnoticed corners of the city. For example, in the series Pinturinhas, empty building interiors take on the qualities of minimalist sculptures. In Camargo’s work, multiple canvasses containing fragments of familiar urban sights, like windows and staircases, are arranged into restless compositions that disrupt the tradition of landscape painting. Join us for a conversation between these two exciting young artists featured in Cruzamentos: Contemporary Art in Brazil.

Born in 1980, Baldan has a MFA degree from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) and a BFA degree from Florida International University. Camargo was born in 1970 and is also a graduate of UFRJ; she previously studied at the School of Visual Arts of Parque Lage. Cruzamentos is the first major exhibition in the US for both artists.

This event is a part of Via Brasil, the Wexner Center’s multidisciplinary initiative focusing on contemporary art and culture in Brazil.
