One of the primary influences on Kerry James Marshall’s Rythm Mastr project was the artist’s childhood experience of a lack of black superheroes in comics and graphic novels.

Dr. Rebecca Wanzo, assistant professor in the Departments of Women's Studies and African-American and African Studies at Ohio State, discusses the history of black representation in comics and how recent creators of black comic book characters have challenged previous biases and stereotypes.
