Richard Roth gives an illustrated lecture on the artist as collector, interrogating definitions of art and beauty, investigating the urge to take meaning from patterns arrayed around us in kitchens and newspapers and cosmetic counters.

"Artists are collectors by nature and by necessity. We collect artifacts, vistas, animals, or people that serve as models or subject matter. From found objects to other art works, artists also collect for inspiration. The qualities of things teach lessons and nourish us. So many studios serve as private museums, chapels of ephemera and oddities to sustain the Muse."

Richard Roth is chairperson of the painting and printmaking department at Virginia Commonwealth University. Roth has taught at Ohio State University, New York University, The School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and the University of California-Berkeley. He has been a visiting artist at the Glasgow School of Art, and the Birmingham Institute of Art and Design at the University of Central England.

Presented by Ohio State's Department of Art. Cosponsored by the Wexner Center.
