This symposium, inspired by Away from Home, investigates the topic of home and focuses on issues of gendered space, power and economics, and safety and surveillance. Panelists are Away from Home artists Lisa Brice and Gregory Green, along with Ohio State faculty members Ruby Tapia (Women's Studies) and Valerie Lee (English, Women's Studies, and African-American and African Studies). Come early and see the exhibition. The gallery is open until 7 pm tonight.
In the work of South African artist Lisa Brice, home is often under attack, threatened from without by social instability and from within by social conditioning.
Controversial installation artist Gregory Green explores the dichotomy between systems of control imposed on society by various forms of authority and the strategies adopted by individuals and communities to overturn the social order.
Ohio State professor Ruby Tapia discusses how images of domesticity have historically accompanied often violent assertions of national security and identity, and how this relationship is manifest in the current global "war on terror."
Moderator Valerie Lee is the chair of Ohio State's Department of English and a professor in the Departments of WomenÌs Studies and African-American and African Studies.
