DeeDee and Herb Glimcher Lecture: Walter Hood

"A pioneer in a new approach to landscape design."—New York Times

Hear from renowned landscape architect and artist Walter Hood at the second annual Glimcher Lecture.

Hood, who specializes in rejuvenating urban areas, is a professor at the University of California, Berkeley, and principal of Hood Design.

In the Wexner Center's annual DeeDee and Herb Glimcher Lecture, funded through the generosity of the Glimcher family, a distinguished guest speaker discusses issues in contemporary art or architecture.

Walter Hood, this year's speaker, is a professor of landscape architecture and environmental planning at the University of California, Berkeley, and principal of Hood Design. Drawing on research, community interaction, and careful observation of specific neighborhoods, he pulls together plazas, playgrounds, and pavement into new and uniquely urban forms that are resonant of a site's past. Hood has worked on 10 landscape projects in his home base of Oakland, California, including a rejuvenation of the city's once-blighted Lafayette Park.

A gifted teacher and a brilliant critic of American urban landscape design, Hood has exhibited and lectured on his professional projects both nationally and abroad. He is also an accomplished visual artist, and his site-specific work was featured in SFMOMA's 2001 exhibition Revelatory Landscapes. His published monographs, Urban Diaries (1999) and Blues & Jazz Landscape Improvisations (1993), illuminate his unique approach to issues of urban landscape design.

The DeeDee and Herb Glimcher Program Fund was created through the generosity of the Glimcher family in order to provide lasting opportunities for Wexner Center patrons to further enhance their understanding of the art and architecture of our time. The fund supports an annual lecture by a distinguished speaker. The center deeply appreciates the Glimchers' longtime commitment to the cultural vitality of this community. Their generous engagement with the Wexner Center and the university is sure to have a profound and lasting impact throughout Columbus and the region.

Cosponsored by Ohio State's Knowlton School of Architecture.
