Charles Gaines on the Blues

Artist and sometimes-drummer Charles Gaines shares his thoughts on the relationship between motown, jazz, and the blues, and on his work Untitled (Regression Series: Group 3), 1973–14, which appears in Blues for Smoke (on view through December 29). Here, he takes a moment to discuss the piece's aesthetic, its intellectual rigor, and the ephemeral metaphor that is "smoke."
