GenWex Loves Ohio

Marisa Espe, Wexner Center Education Assistant

Oct 27, 2015

The GenWex Advisory Committee, our young patrons' initiative, is a diverse collective of culturally aware, technologically savvy individuals. Members of this young professional (or semi-professional) group share a keen awareness and interest in the arts and culture.
This Thursday, October 29, GenWex will be celebrating all things Ohio at a Made In Ohio reception at Seventh Son Brewing. The reception follows the conversation “Made in Ohio,” between Steven Bognar and Paul Hill, two Ohio filmmakers who will share some of their favorite works from the Buckeye State and discuss the challenges and opportunities of making films here. The conversation comes as part of the four-day celebration Picture Lock: 25 Years of Film/Video Residencies at the Wex, which includes filmmaker visits and conversations such as this, screenings from our film/video archive, area premieres, and much more. Marisa Espe, Wex education assistant, polled Lindsay Acker, GenWex Advisory Committee (GWAC) chair and project manager at ZenGenius, and Jessica Burton, GWAC junior chair and country planner for Canada at Express, on some of their Ohio favorites.

How long have you lived in Ohio?
Lindsay: I was born and raised in Columbus, Ohio. I've lived here for 26 years and later in NYC for 5 years, then I decided to move back to Columbus out of a mutual love and respect for both places.
Jessica: I have lived in Ohio for just under two years--one year and nine months to be exact! I grew up and lived in Dallas, Texas prior to relocating to Ohio.

Favorite Ohio band/DJ:
Lindsay: Kenny Lectro
Jessica: Recently, a local artist I’ve really liked is Sinkane, however, one of my favorite bands of all time is from Canton: The O’Jays.

Favorite Ohio brew:
Lindsay: Jackie O's Mystic Mama IPA
Jessica: My go–to’s are Wuffles and Humulus Nimbus from Seventh Son and Ginger Verve from Brother’s Drake.

Favorite place in Ohio to get a burger:
Lindsay: Northstar Café—great veggie burgers!
Jessica: I need to step up my burger game, but my favorite repeat is Flip Side and their One Red Door Burger!

Favorite Ohio destination:
Lindsay: Athens
Jessica: Hocking Hills definitely.

Favorite Ohioan:
Jessica: One of my favorite Ohioans, although I never personally met her, was Aminah Robinson. I was able to see her recognized at the annual 2015 YWCA Women of Achievement Luncheon and her story, art, and people she has touched are and were truly inspiring.

Favorite Ohio sports team:
Lindsay: The Columbus Crew

Favorite Ohio memory:
Lindsay: My wedding!
Jessica: Last winter when my manager asked me for my autograph…because I was featured in a group photo in CityScene magazine! That was great, considering I’d been here less than a year, and I already made it in the local magazine—I knew I would like living here.

In your opinion, what makes Ohio great?
Lindsay: First: the people, and because Ohio is culturally rich while being affordable.
Jessica: Well, I’m still learning and growing into life in Ohio, but so far I’d say the beautiful state parks, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Join Lindsay, Jessica, and other members of our GenWex Advisory Committee at the Made in Ohio reception at Seventh Son this Thursday. It’s free to attend, but RSVPs are requested and can be made here. (Don’t forget to let us know if you have a favorite song by an Ohio musician or about the Buckeye State—you might just hear it at the reception!)
