Saturday night saw not only the area premiere of Kelly Reichardt's Old Joy at the Wexner Center Film/Video Theater to a packed house, Reichardt was also on hand to introduce the film and take a few questions afterward. In addition to insights about her process of making the film, we learned that her dog took to actor/musician Will Oldham very quickly, some of the birds you hear on the soundtrack are actually overdubbed birds native to the East Coast, and about some of her methods for shooting at the Bagby Hot Springs in the wilds of northwest Oregon. It was a great evening with the artist responsible for the work, one sure to be replicated next week when filmmakers Nick Doob and Chris Hegedus visit for the area premiere of their documentary, Al Franken: God Spoke on October 24.
