Thoughts on Japan

It was a sobering coincidence that we were putting the finishing touches on a summer-long series devoted to Japanese cinema when news of the devastating earthquake and tragic aftermath in that region broke. As far back as December, we have been organizing a series that will feature the best of Japanese cinema from the silent era to the present day, not unlike our series devoted to Italian cinema last summer. While we are still presenting “Kinema Japan” from June – August, the horrors afflicting Japan will certainly cast a different light on our series. While watching movies is a frivolity compared to the effect of the quake on so many, we do hope the series will provide numerous moments for reflection on recent events.
