Workshop Review: DIY (Do It Yourself) Propaganda

Nov 17, 2009

On October 16 and 17, K-12 teachers gathered at the Wexner Center to investigate the arts of social commentary, persuasion, and propaganda. Working with teaching artists Dan Gerdeman and Corey Aumiller, they explored the works of a range of artists and had the opportunity to create and display their own pieces. The concept of propaganda, which I have always associated with government or business executives, became an empowering tool for me to express myself. The method of using stencils and spray paint to create a personal propaganda message has inspired and revolutionized my personal art-making and the instruction that I give my students. Dan and Corey presented a difficult subject matter with professionalism and passion that was inspiring for all in attendance. They really made art come alive! I feel that many of the conversations I had at the workshop with other educators has also influenced my instructional practices and forged new professional alliances. Thank you for offering such a great workshop for COI day and allowing me expand and develop as a professional artist and art educator.
