ACORN and the Firestorm

(Reuben Atlas and Samuel D. Pollard, 2017)

“A withering chronicle of death by media.”—Salon

This compelling new documentary delves into the fierce controversy surrounding the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now during and after Barack Obama’s 2008 presidential campaign. Advocating for low-income people’s access to health care and voter registration, the left-leaning alliance drew the ire of conservative groups, which accused them of systemic fraud and “stealing” the election. The drama that unfolded after a pair of right-wing, amateur journalists attempted to infiltrate the group in 2009 not only brought an end to the 40-year-old organization, but inspired the birth of Breitbart News Network and hinted at the deep political divide we endure to this day. Codirector Samuel Pollard visited the Wex in March 2017 with his documentary Two Trains Runnin’. (84 mins., DCP)
