“You’ve never seen a period movie quite like Aferim!”—IndieWire

A Romanian Western drawing comparisons to everything from The Searchers and Pulp Fiction to The Last Detail, the playful Aferim! is an unexpectedly moving parable developed from historical documents and songs. In 1835, a police officer and his son cross the countryside in pursuit of a runaway slave. Along the way, they meet Turks and Russians, Christians and Jews, Romanians and Hungarians, all with different long-standing prejudices against the others. Radu Jude weaves these encounters into an alternately irreverent and absurdist commentary, with sarcastic reflection on contemporary life. (106 mins., DCP)
