"A TV talent show that challenges gender, tribal, and religious boundaries is transfixing the nation's people—and antagonizing religious scholars."—Guardian

Afghanistan's version of American Idol is at the center of Afghan Star, which captured the World Cinema Audience and Directing Awards at the Sundance Film Festival. The film looks at the return of pop culture to the country after 30 years of war and Taliban rule, by focusing on four young contestants seeking new lives and opportunities. Viewers vote for their favorite by cell phone, and for many this is their first experience with democracy. Things turn perilous when one contestant, a woman, dances on stage, threatening her own safety and the future of the show itself. (87 mins., video)
