Filmmaker Kleber Mendonça Filho returns to the Wex with Aquarius, his heralded follow-up to the critically acclaimed Neighboring Sounds (2012). Brazilian icon Sonia Braga stars as a retired music critic who, after surviving cancer and losing her husband, lives a happy life filled with friends, family, and daily swims. Everything changes when her seaside apartment building is bought by greedy developers and, as the lone holdout, she finds herself fending them off on her own. The film caused a stir at Cannes when the cast and Mendonça publically protested Brazil’s political situation on the red carpet. The film is on several critics’ top-ten lists for 2016—don’t miss it. (145 mins., DCP)
