A pioneering artist and filmmaker (and recipient of a multiyear Wexner Center Artist Residency Award), Barbara Hammer is known for work that explores lesbian sexuality and the body. Her 1990 film Sanctus, comprised of moving X-ray films from the 1950s made by Dr. James Sibley Watson, goes beneath the surface of the skin, both to explore the human body’s very structure and mechanics and to highlight its fragility. (19 mins., 16mm film transferred to video)
