Introduced by Richard Linklater

(Richard Linklater, 2014)

Reception | 5:30 PM

Mon, July 21, 2014 7 PM

“Isn’t quite like anything else in the history of cinema.”
— Andrew O’Hehir (Salon) on Boyhood

“This movie might make you cry for reasons you can’t quite articulate.”
—Tim Grierson, Paste

Join us for an evening with Richard Linklater as the revered director discusses his remarkable career in film, which has included such landmarks in American cinema as Slacker (1991), Dazed and Confused (1993), the Before trilogy (1995–2013), and his latest masterpiece Boyhood. Linklater will introduce the film and stay for a Q&A session after the screening. Arrive early for a free public reception with the director in our lower lobby.

Evoking elements of Michael Apted’s famed Up documentary series and his own Before trilogy, Linklater’s Boyhood follows 12 years in the life of the young boy Mason (Ellar Coltrane) as well as the lives of his divorced parents (Ethan Hawke and Patricia Arquette) and their individual struggles to find happiness. Linklater began shooting the film in 2002, gathering his actors each subsequent year to continue his depiction of the emotional (and physical) growth of a boy and his family from the time Mason is in the first grade to when he’s leaving for college. It’s certain to be atop many “best of” lists at year’s end, and many are describing it as the strongest work in Linklater’s stellar career. (164 mins., DCP)
