Derek Jarman's Caravaggio is arguably the director's greatest achievement, an exquisitely homo-erotic retelling of the painter's short, violent life. Jarman, who died from HIV complications in 1994, was originally a painter, and his ecstatic identification with Caravaggio infuses every frame of this unique testament of one artist to another.
