Chronicle of Anna Magdalena Bach

New Restoration

(Chronik der Anna Magdalena Bach, Jean-Marie Straub and Danièle Huillet, 1968)

Tue, June 5, 2018 7 PM

“The net effect is not having seen a film but having lived a real moment, in the presence of monumental music. Is this a documentary, a biopic, or something else we’ve never named?”—Michael Atkinson, Village Voice

On its 50th anniversary, Chronicle of Anna Magdalena Bach still remains ahead of its time and holds its place as one of the most singular and radical movies about music ever made. Paragons of precise filmmaking, Straub and Huillet built the picture around letters that Anna Magdalena Bach wrote to her husband Johann Sebastian and immerse viewers in the sounds and spaces of the early 18 century. Filled with lengthy performances of Bach’s compositions by some of the best baroque musicians of the time and filmed in locations where the music was originally performed, this minimalist masterpiece continues to offer enormous and surprising richness. (94 mins., 2K DCP)
