"Entertaining and moving...Bring your daughters!" —Seattle Times Providing a delightful and raucous dose of girl power, the documentary Girls Rock! tracks the musical (and personal) education of several campers at the Rock 'n' Roll Camp for Girls in Portland, Oregon. Girls ages 8 to 18 come to the camp from all over the country to learn from counselors like Carrie Brownstein from Sleater-Kinney and Beth Ditto from The Gossip. The girls form bands, learn instruments, write songs, and then, in a rush of excitement and self-discovery, perform them in front of a large audience. But the camp—and the documentary—does much more than satisfy the young participants' Guitar Hero dreams, it also becomes an exercise in female empowerment that leaves no one unchanged. As Seattle Magazine wrote, the film is "revolutionary, heart-breaking, and laugh-out-loud funny. Absolutely not to be missed." (90 mins., 35mm) Local "all girl" band the Mary Anns rock out a few tunes after the film and answer your questions about what it’s like to be female in the music industry. Presented in partnership with the Girlz Rhythm and Rock Camp. Trailer: Need a Break? You'll find child-friendly menu items at Cam's on Campus. And don't forget to visit the Wexner Center Store, for toys, gifts, and books for all ages. The 2008 festival was organized by Chris Stults, assistant curator of film/video, and Dionne Custer, educator for school programs. If you would like to discuss the specifics of any film before viewing it with your child, please call Dionne Custer at (614) 292-7008.
