Don't Call Me Son

(Anna Muylaert, 2016)

Don't Call Me Son

Androgynously attractive with his eyeliner and minidresses, 17-year-old Pierre enjoys the attention he gets from both boys and girls. Just as he’s beginning to know himself, his mom is arrested for stealing him at birth. He’s then returned to his affluent, more conservative birth parents, whom he quickly starts to rebel against. Brazilian filmmaker Anna Muylaert (The Second Mother) carefully unveils great emotional depth and striking performances from her cast, particularly newcomer Naomi Nero, the brooding and towering Pierre, and Daniela Nefussi, who seamlessly plays both of Pierre’s mothers. (82 mins., DCP)
