Eat Drink Man Woman

Ang Lee, 1994

Eat Drink Man Woman eloquently depicts how food binds us together across generation, culture, and gender.

Filled with close-ups of food preparation and sumptuous shots of Taiwanese cuisine, the film follows a widowed master chef and the three single daughters who live with him as the women search for love. Eat Drink Man Woman was the final film in director Ang Lee's trilogy of stories exploring cross-generational changes and conflicts in culture and behavior in his native Taiwan. Like its predecessors, Pushing Hands (1992) and The Wedding Banquet (1993), the film features Taiwanese actor Sihung Lung, who plays the master chef, in a leading role as a patriarch. Lee went on to earn international acclaim for movies as varied as Sense and Sensibility (1995), The Ice Storm (1997), and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000), before winning a best director Oscar for Brokeback Mountain (2005). Eat Drink Man Woman was nominated for an Academy Award for best foreign film. (124 mins., 35mm)
