Born in 1914, the late John Hubley is one of the most influential figures in animation history. His career began at Disney Studios in the 1930s, but it was in the films he directed at United Productions of America (where he created the character of Mr. Magoo) that his characteristic formal experimentation and emotional nuance were fully realized. Hubley was forced to leave UPA in 1952 for not naming names in front of the House Committee on Un-American Activities. Along with wife Faith, he formed Storyboard Studios, where they produced an astonishing body of work, ranging from television commercials to Sesame Street segments to deeply personal independent films.

The program focuses primarily on Hubley’s astonishing post-UPA work—including Adventures of an * (1956), Moonbird (1959), and Eggs (1970)—but includes examples of his UPA work as well. The program includes:

Adventures Of An * (1956)
Tender Game (1958)
Moonbird (1959)
The Hat (1964)
Urbanissimo (1966)
Windy Day (1967)
Of Men & Demons (1968)
Eggs (1970)
Fuddy Duddy Buddy (1951; with Mr. Magoo)
Barefaced Flatfoot (1951; with Mr. Magoo)

The tour of John Hubley at 100 was organized by Artists Public Domain/Cinema Conservancy and Hubley Studios.
