Julia Reichert and Jim Klein Introduce Growing Up Female

Yellow Springs–based filmmakers Julia Reichert and Jim Klein visit to introduce their groundbreaking 1971 film Growing Up Female, which was added to the Library of Congress’s National Film Registry last December.

Widely acknowledged as the first feature film to emerge out of the modern women’s movement of the early 1970s, the documentary follows the lives of six women and six girls in southwest Ohio and examines the institutional forces that shape their lives. The selection of Growing Up Female for the National Film Registry reflects the film’s importance and guarantees its preservation.

Reichert and Klein also present and discuss two other short films from the women’s liberation movement of the 1960s and 1970s. Make Out (1970) reveals what is really going on in a young woman’s mind as she makes out with a boy in a car. Up Against the Wall Miss America (1968) documents a protest at the Miss America contest in 1968. (program app. 65 mins., video)
