Melody Set Me Free
Kalup Linzy, 2007
Apr 1, 2009–Apr 30, 2009
Video and performance artist Kalup Linzy takes on reality television in Melody Set Me Free, telling an American Idol-esque story of love, loss, and the quest for fame. This recent work continues Linzy's explorations of contemporary TV narratives touching on themes of race, gender, class, and stereotypes, as in his satirizations of daytime soap operas in All My Churen (2003), da Young and da Mess (2005), and As da Art World Might Turn (2006). Linzy lives and works in New York and was the recipient of a 2005 Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation award, a 2007 Guggenheim Fellowship, and a 2008 Creative Capital grant. (15:16 mins., video)
