Naruse's poignant insights into the lives of women and working people are displayed in this pair of films from nearly three decades apart.

Second feature start time: 9 pm. Naruse's final film, Scattered Clouds tells of a pregnant woman who is suddenly widowed when her husband is killed in a traffic accident. The other driver, though found innocent, is so distraught that he pursues the woman, begging forgiveness and offering financial aid. (108 mins.)

In The Whole Family Works, a mother, father, and nine children scrape out an existence by pooling their collective salaries earned at a local factory. Their precarious financial situation is threatened when the oldest child announces he wants to quit the factory to attend electrician's school. The film is an amazing document of poverty in prewar Japan at a time when artists' criticisms of Japanese society were routinely censored by the government. (65 mins.)
