Sean O'Sullivan takes Francois Truffaut’s famous claim that “cinema” and “Britain” are incompatible terms as the point of departure for this year’s annual Film Studies Lecture. O'Sullivan discusses a hidden generation of British filmmakers and the strange status of the "cinematic" in conversations about movies of the United Kingdom. An assistant professor in Ohio State’s Department of English, O’Sullivan is also a member of the university’s Film Studies faculty. The Film Studies Program, founded in 2005, draws together the teaching and research expertise of recognized scholars from almost a dozen university departments, offering students the opportunity to think historically and critically about the entire culture of global cinema. Each year, the program sponsors a public lecture by one of the faculty members about a topic related to their research in this field. The lecture will be preceded by the presentation of the BUSEY (Best Undergraduate Student Essay) Award for 2011. Come and join Film Studies Faculty, Staff, and Students afterwards for a reception in the Wex Café. Catering is provided by Milo's catering and a variety of drinks will be available.
