Service of the Goods

(2013)

June 1, 2014–June 30, 2014

An original and unsettling examination of documentary representation, Service of the Goods remakes shot-for-shot selected scenes from Frederick Wiseman’s seminal documentaries on state-run, tax-funded American institutions, including Titicut Follies (1967), High School (1968), Hospital (1969), and Welfare (1975). To create his haunting work, Canadian filmmaker Jean-Paul Kelly bracingly reorients our attention by covering up the human element that’s foregrounded in Wiseman’s films and reducing the soundtrack to a queasy murmur.
