The Spitting Image The Silent Raid

Double Feature

wex grid image fill

This program pairs two tales of resistance against the Nazi occupation of the Netherlands during the Second World War.

Second feature start time: 9:10 pm. Withdrawn for 40 years following its debut at the Cannes Film Festival in 1963, The Spitting Image is a psychologically acute story of a mild-mannered young man drawn deeper and deeper into the Dutch resistance against the Nazi occupation. (Fons Rademakers, 1963; 120 mins.)

The Silent Raid uses the documentary mode to tell the story of European resistance to the Nazis, focusing on a risky 1944 raid on a Dutch prison to free political prisoners. (Paul Rotha, 1962; 81 mins.)

The Human Dutch was conceived by the UCLA Film and Television Archive and the Nederlands Filmmuseum in association with the Consulate General of the Netherlands, Los Angeles. The program is presented with the support of the Dutch Cultural Fund.
