A Summer’s Tale

(Eric Rohmer, 1996)

wex grid image fill

“The sunniest and funniest of Rohmer’s seasonal tales…wonderfully witty…as suspenseful and manipulative as a classical farce…Rohmer provides insights aplenty into matters of love, friendship, fidelity, loneliness, luck, destiny and desire…If it all appears artless, look again…Truly great art seldom feels a need to draw attention to itself.”—Time Out London

Never released theatrically in the US until now, Rohmer’s A Summer’s Tale follows Gaspard (Melvil Poupaud), a recent college graduate who arrives at the seaside in Brittany for three-week vacation. He hopes his girlfriend Lena will join him, but as time passes some of the other young women begin to catch his eye—which leads to inevitable complications once Lena arrives. Part of Rohmer’s “Tales of the Four Seasons” series. (113 mins., DCP)
