“Entertaining and full of surprising twists, this highly cinematic tale of a Copenhagen policeman working punishment duty in the provinces plays with genre in a manner that can be compared with the Coen brothers or David Lynch.”—Variety

“I love this film, it is just further proof that Danish people are clearly out of their minds.”—Adam Yauch (of the Beastie Boys)

An intense fable reminiscent of the Coen Brothers’ Blood Simple and No Country for Old Men, the Danish mystery thriller Terribly Happy is an expertly crafted tale of offbeat crime and dry humor.

Robert Hanson is a Copenhagen police officer who, following a nervous breakdown, is transferred to a small provincial town to take up a position that has mysteriously become vacant. There he gets mixed up with a married femme fatale and struggles to fit in, although his big city temperament makes it nearly impossible for him to understand the seemingly uncivilized, bizarre behavior displayed by the townspeople. Terribly Happy displays a unusual, often-macabre vision of the darkest depths to which people will go to achieve a sense of security and belonging. Winner of seven Robert Awards (the Danish Oscars) including best picture, director, actor, actress, and screenplay. (102 mins., 35mm)
