Robert Hanson is a Copenhagen police officer who, following a nervous breakdown, is transferred to a small provincial town to take up a position that has mysteriously become vacant. There he gets mixed up with a married femme fatale and struggles to fit in, although his big city temperament makes it nearly impossible for him to understand the seemingly uncivilized, bizarre behavior displayed by the townspeople. Terribly Happy displays a unusual, often-macabre vision of the darkest depths to which people will go to achieve a sense of security and belonging.
