In Vulcano, Magnani stars as a prostitute who is banished by the police to the tiny volcanic island of her youth. Ostracized on her return, she finds refuge with her sister, whose honor and reputation she is determined to defend. Dieterle is perhaps best known for such Hollywood classics as The Life of Emile Zola (1937), The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1939), and The Devil and Daniel Webster (1941). (106 mins., 35mm)
