Grlic's penetrating documentary on Croatia's 2000 presidential election, plus a portrait of Croatian artist Edo Murtic.
Who Wants to Be a President offers a truly remarkable inside look at how electoral politics actually workÛin this case, during the 2000 Croatian presidential election.
Armed with unobtrusive digital cameras, Grlic and his team of photographers had unprecedented access to the winners and losers in the campaign. This "backstage pass" results in a portrait of a society in transition, with idealism and cynicism engaged in lively combat. The most ambitious documentary project ever filmed in Croatia, it's also the first native documentary to screen in that country. (2001; 54 mins.)
Tonight's program begins with Boulder, an intimate portrait of 81-year-old Edo Murtic, the most famous Croatian artist currently working. Grlic's film focuses on a single painting, which we see progressing from the very first line in a sketchbook to its completion and presentation at a public exhibition. (2002; 20 mins.)
