This tribute to community, creativity, and dignity documents (with magic realist touches) Los Angeles’s historic Silver Platter, an LGBT-friendly bar that has catered to Latino immigrants since 1963.
Centered on the group of young, queer artists of color (including Tsang and DJs Nguzunguzu and Total Freedom) who organize the bar’s weekly performance-art party, Wildness examines what happens when the party’s popularity raises issues of safety and belonging and shows how difference can be a catalyst for both strife and growth. The film was produced with support from the Wex’s Film/Video Studio program and featured in the Whitney Biennial and MoMA’s Documentary Fortnight series. (74 mins., HDcam)
Cosponsored by Ohio State’s Department of English and Asian American Studies, Sexuality Studies, and Film Studies Programs. Community partners Stonewall Columbus and Outlook Columbus.
