Join us as Annie Dorsen shares aspects of her practice making performances and installations that dramatize the complex interface between humans and machines in this virtual Diversities in Practice program.
Dorsen calls her work "algorithmic theater," in which computer procedures generate texts and other theatrical elements in real time at each presentation. Drawing from a variety of disciplines, including philosophy, cultural theory, information science, and AI, her projects question the long-held assumptions of the theatrical form in order to envision its future. Dorsen highlights past and current works and will share some of the text for her upcoming project, made with the Generative Pre-trained Transformer 3 (GPT-3).

Diversities in Practice is a collaboration between Ohio State’s Wexner Center for the Arts, Department of Art, and Living Culture Initiative. This series includes talks and moderated discussions featuring a range of artists, thinkers, and practitioners engaged in compelling and critical work, centering projects that examine, shape, and push both material and ideological boundaries. These presentations will be available online throughout the year.
Annie Dorsen is a director and writer whose works explore the intersection of algorithmic art and live performance. Her most recent project, Infinite Sun (2019), is an algorithmic sound installation commissioned by the Sharjah Biennial 14. Previous performance projects, including The Great Outdoors (2017), Yesterday Tomorrow (2015), A Piece of Work (2013), and Hello Hi There (2010), have been widely presented in the US and internationally. Dorsen's script for A Piece of Work was published by Ugly Duckling Presse, and she has contributed essays for The Drama Review, Theatre Magazine, Etcetera, Frakcija, and Performing Arts Journal (PAJ). She is the cocreator of the 2008 Broadway musical Passing Strange, which she also directed. Dorsen has received the 2019 MacArthur Fellowship, 2018 Guggenheim Fellowship, 2018 Spalding Gray Award, 2016 Foundation for Contemporary Arts Grant to Artists Award, and the 2014 Herb Alpert Award for the Arts in Theatre.
