The duo Brother(hood) Dance! performs two movement portraits featuring stories of Black men and “brotherhood” that challenge assumptions of race, gender, and sexuality.
Orlando Zane Hunter Jr. and Ricarrdo Valentine portray their personal journeys using multimedia, dance, and storytelling. They question and investigate connections to their ancestors and issues of environmental justice as well as the degradation of Black family identity and the government’s role in media production. At the heart of this multidisciplinary meditation are the men’s mothers, who slip through time and space to guide them both in unexpected ways.

Brother(hood) Dance! was formed in April 2014 by Orlando Zane Hunter Jr. and Ricarrdo Valentine to research, create, and perform dances of freedom. A 2020 honoree of the New York Dance and Performance Awards (the Bessies), the duo seeks to inform audiences of sociopolitical and environmental injustices from a global perspective as well as to amplify the contemporary experience of same gender–loving African Americans. Brother(hood) Dance! has performed at FiveMyles, Center for Performance Research, BAAD! (Bronx Academy of Arts and Dance), Denmark Arts Center, Universidad de las Américas Puebla/Performática (Mexico), Escuela Profesional de Danza de Mazatlán/Viso Festival (Mexico), and Jean-René Delsoin Institute (Haiti), among other venues.
