Pather Panchali

(Satyajit Ray, 1955)

101 Films You Need to See Before Graduation

Two children in traditional clothing stand outdoors among trees, smiling and looking at the camera.

This humanist portrait of the joys and mysteries of childhood in a rural Indian village is celebrated as one of the great works of world cinema.

The great Indian director Satyajit Ray’s debut feature Pather Panchali immediately established him as an exciting new voice on the world cinema stage. Influenced by Italian neorealist films such as Bicycle Thieves (Vittorio De Sica, 1948), the film captures the rhythms of everyday life in a small Indian village, primarily through the eyes of young Apu and his sister Durga. Their childhood adventures are set against the hardship of their family’s day-to-day existence including the loss of cherished family members. In Bengali with English subtitles. (125 mins., 4K DCP)

Screened in conjunction with Ohio State’s International Education Week.
