“What we’re witnessing is a dancer’s liberation.”—The Times (London)

After performing the lead role in the spectacularly popular international dance phenomenon Riverdance for several years to great acclaim, Irish step dance prodigy Colin Dunne wanted to break loose and take on fresh challenges in dance making. The result is this engrossing multimedia solo show. Out Of Time finds Dunne combining choreography, spoken commentary, and video to trace his evolution as a dancer while also staking a claim for his artistic future. The New York Times called the show “an unprecedented achievement: an Irish dance performance of emotional and intellectual complexity, about many things.”

As the show progresses, you’ll see Dunne look back on the joy he felt as boy immersed in Irish culture and step dance traditions, and on the thunderous ovations on the world’s stages he experienced. He then presents his mature reflections and desire to go beyond step dance’s strict formal strictures and find fresh territory to explore in movement informed by contemporary dance aesthetics. Intimate and playful, Out of Time offers up thrilling flourishes of footwork and reveals both Dunne’s superb virtuosity as a step dance master and his new dimensions of expression. An unsentimental homage to Irish step dance and a bold investigation of Dunne’s personal and artistic relationship to the tradition that has shaped his life, Out of Time will delight devotees of contemporary dance as well as fans of Riverdance keen for a glimpse behind the scenes.
