Guillermo Klein Y Los Guachos
“Rightly heralded in postmodern jazz circles for the flexibility, urgency, and otherworldly vision of his music.”—New York Times
Guillermo Klein Y Los Guachos, a fantastic 11-piece band, bridge jazz and “folkloric futurism.” One of the most original artists to emerge on the international scene in recent times, Argentine jazz composer and pianist Guillermo Klein is noted for distinctive compositions featuring dazzling rhythms, lush harmonic layers, and rich melodies. Klein feeds off the improvisational energy of jazz but also integrates sounds from a broad range of musical experiences, including the folkloric tangos and chacareras of his native Argentina, the emotional pull of human voices, musical modernism and minimalism, as well as counterpoint, drones, complex meters, and children's songs. The results are unclassifiable but frequently buoyed by intense lyricism and thick, active grooves.
We are extremely pleased to be able to introduce to Columbus audiences to this widely beloved “musician’s musician,” who rarely tours in the United States, immediately after his annual residency at the Village Vanguard. Klein attended the Berklee School of Music in Boston, established a presence in New York early on, and has since balanced his time between the progressive international jazz hotbed of Barcelona and his home in Buenos Aires. His all-star band (who perform on Filtros, his most recent critically acclaimed release) features top musicians dedicated to the demands of his advanced musical ideas and includes Miguel Zenón, Bill McHenry, and Chris Cheek on saxes, trumpeters Diego Urcola, Taylor Haskins, and Richard Nant, Sandro Tomasi on trombone, and guitarist Ben Monder, with a rhythm section of Fernando Huergo on bass and Jeff Ballard on drums. This concert will be an apt closer to this season’s very full jazz schedule…don’t miss it!
Set up cabaret-style, our intimate Performance Space offers a perfect setting for live jazz. You experience the music up close with superb sound and can sip wine, beer, or a soft drink as you enjoy the show.
