The Wexner Center’s February music lineup includes rising jazz stars and an acclaimed indie musician, all making their local debut in one of our two black box spaces. THE JUAN MACLEAN with Tim Sweeney

With his DFA label disc Less Than Human, robo-rocker (and former member of Six Finger Satellite) John Maclean—a.k.a. The Juan Maclean—synthesized the best bits of such ‘70s synth pioneers as Devo, Brian Eno, and Kraftwerk, then injected his own fresh take on electro dance beats. Maintaining strong emotional underpinnings throughout, Maclean’s vision of the future celebrates the inevitability of human shortcomings while reveling in gleaming machine-like precision. MIGUEL ZENÓN QUARTET

Jazz sax sensation Miguel Zenón’s dynamic sound draws from the songs and rhythms of his native Puerto Rico, with a hard-bop approach to these soulful melodies that places him at the forefront of the new Latin jazz scene. A standout with the San Francisco Jazz Collective—the San Francisco Chronicle called him “the fire that finally ignited the Collective”—he’s ready for a turn in the spotlight with his tight quartet. VIJAY IYER QUARTET

Rising jazz piano star Vijay Iyer is a singular talent: a progressive player with a strong rhythmic drive and a forward-thinking composer inspired by globe-spanning influences. Iyer has worked with such jazz compatriots as Steve Coleman and Greg Tate’s Burnt Sugar, and also collaborated with tabla player Karsh Kale and hip-hop performance poets Mike Ladd and Will Power. Now he’s coming into his own, leading his own band (which features alto sax player Rudresh Mahanthappa) and showcasing his sophisticated, exuberant, and emotionally engaging tunes. • Scotland’s Mogwai brings its epic sound to the Wex on March 2. Noise rockers Growing open.
• The Books return March 6 with its idiosyncratic sound that bends twangy acoustic instrumentation into quirky and genre-blurring songs. Death Vessel opens the show with a set of its beguiling neo-folk tunes.
• On March 11, The Table of the Elements Tour, featuring musician and filmmaker Tony Conrad, Jonathan Kane of Swan, and guitarist/composer Rhys Chatham, comes to the Performance Space for a night showcasing these mavericks of the American avant-garde.
