Registration Begins Soon for Summer Workshops at Wex

Mon, Feb 20, 2006

The Wexner Center for the Arts, in collaboration with The Ohio State University Department of Art, announces this year’s Summer Youth Workshops for children ages 4-13 in June and July, and teenArts fusion: summer experiments for youth 14-18 in July and August. These one- to two-week courses, led by local practicing artists and Ohio State graduate students, inspire and energize young people as they develop art-making skills in such fields as dance, poetry, film, photography, stopmotion animation, computer game design, and cyber art.

“With these summer workshops, we seek to offer a wide variety of fun, hands-on workshops led by engaged instructors to stimulate creative thinking and discussion,” says Shelly Casto, Director of Education at the Wexner Center. “We see these workshops as an alternative—and educational—summer activity for children and teens.”

Enrollment is limited, and advance registration is required; these workshops tend to fill up fast. Public registration begins March 6 (member registration begins on February 27). Registration fees are $65 general public, $55 for Wexner Center members. PDF versions of the brochures are available at www.wexarts.org (and click on “learn”).

Some of the Summer Youth Workshops include:

• Dance Stories (original stories using dance and sound)

• Video Venture (new video techniques to create stories)

• Art Among the Trees (which meets at OSU’s Chadwick Arboretum)

A few of the teenArts fusion: summer experiments:

• Audio Odyssey (led by a DJ and audio artist)

• The Songwriter’s Method (led by a hip-hop artist)

• Cyber Art (creating high-tech interactive works)
