Artist's Talk: Whitfield Lovell EVENT CANCELED

wex grid image fill

Whitfield Lovell's amazingly evocative tableaux combine his exquisite charcoal drawings on wood panels with everyday objects in dramatic installations. He draws much of his figural imagery from photographs he has collected of anonymous African Americans in the early and mid-1900s, and then seeks to create poignant vignettes that suggest their lives and environments.

The artist grew up in the Bronx and studied at Cooper Union in New York. His work is in the permanent collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Smithsonian's National Museum of American Art, and the Seattle Art Museum.
