Ewa Lajer-Burcharth

This year's Lambert Family Lecture features noted art historian Ewa Lajer-Burcharth, a professor at Harvard University. She focuses on the recent video works of American artist Bill Viola and Swiss-born artist Pipilotti Rist in her presentation.

The annual Lambert Family Lecture, funded through the generosity of Bill and Sheila Lambert, brings a distinguished visiting scholar to campus to discusses global issues in art and contemporary culture.

Lajer-Burcharth teaches 18th- and 19th-century European art, contemporary art, and feminist and critical theory. She lectures frequently on issues such as the body image in French visual culture; subjectivity, sexuality, and modernity; and video and new media in contemporary art.

She is the author of Necklines: The Art of Jacques-Louis David after the Terror, a brilliant and original study of the 18th-century French painter. Esteemed art historian Linda Nochlin praised the book as "feminist work on the highest level: incisive, provocative, complex, and convincing." Lajer-Burcharth's forthcoming book is titled A Touch of Self: Painting and Individuality in the 18th Century.

The Lambert Family Lecture Series Endowment at the Wexner Center for the Arts was established through the generosity of Bill and Sheila Lambert to provide opportunities for experts to engage with diverse audiences about global issues in art and contemporary culture. The endowment supports an annual lecture in the contemporary arts by a distinguished speaker.
