Give students a glimpse into the effects of pollution, and one artist's response to them, in this film screening and conversation.

Winner of the World Cinema Audience Award for Documentary at the Sundance Film Festival, Waste Land (Lucy Walker, 2010) is a moving documentary that chronicles artist Vik Muniz's journey from his home in Brooklyn to his native Brazil, and specifically to Jardim Gramacho, the world's largest landfill. There, on the outskirts of Rio de Janeiro, he collaborates with a band of self-designated pickers of recyclable materials and photographs these inspiring characters as they recycle their lives and society's garbage.
