Every thinking mind needs a world view. This program introduces your students to cross-cultural perspectives through experiences with selected contemporary artworks or artists.

This year we will explore arts and cultural perspectives in Afghanistan while viewing the documentary Afghan Star, a film that follows the contestants of a talent contest, similar to American Idol, featuring singers from across the country. This program will explore a wide variety of topics, including coming of age in contemporary Afghanistan, the influence of poetry and music in the region, and the roles of media, propaganda, and cultural perceptions.

The program features the film screening, a guest speaker, and an in-depth peer discussion in a half-day seminar format. Lunch is provided and includes traditional Middle Eastern cuisine. Teachers receive a complimentary copy of the film and other teaching and learning resources and may also schedule an in-class visit to extend this learning experience.

Curriculum/Standards Content: Arts, Geography, Social Studies, History, Humanities, Language Arts/English, and Media Literacy

To register your class, please email edweb@wexarts.org or call (614) 292-6493. Bus subsidies are available.
