Julie Dash’s groundbreaking Daughters of the Dust, one the most important films in the history of American independent cinema, was the topic of much conversation upon its landmark debut 25 years ago—the New Yorker called it “one of the most distinctive, original independent films of the time.” With our world premiere of its new restoration (and Beyonce’s dazzling Lemonade visual album quoting the film) Daughters is the topic of much conversation once again.
In the last few weeks the restoration has been featured in outlets as wide ranging as IndieWire, Entertainment Weekly, the Hollywood Reporter, the New York Times, and more. On the Columbus front, Dash and Daughters have been the subject of much ink in the Columbus Dispatch, Columbus Alive, and Columbus Underground. And on May 20, Melissa Harris-Perry will interview Dash here at the Wex for a live broadcast on Elle’s Facebook page (watch here Friday, May 20 at 5:30 pm). It’s been a well-deserved moment for such a rich, rewarding film—one whose influence continues to reverberate today. We hope you join us for the world premiere of this stunning restoration: tickets are sold-out for the May 20 screening with Dash and Melissa Harris-Perry in-person, though tickets do remain for the May 21 screening.
